**Writing code is one thing. Understanding someone else's code is another skill entirely.**

Writing code is one thing. Understanding someone else's code is another skill entirely. You can build an entire project from scratch and feel confident about your skills. Then you open an unfamiliar codebase, and suddenly even finding where a particular feature is implemented becomes a task. 😂 I'm beginning to realize that becoming a better software engineer isn't just about learning more frameworks. It's also about understanding existing systems, debugging patiently, writing maintainable code, and knowing when not to change something that already works. Building projects teaches you how to code. Collaborating on real products teaches you how to engineer. Developers, what was your biggest challenge the first time you worked on someone else's codebase? #SoftwareEngineering #WebDevelopment #React #BuildInPublic #Africoders

This is such an underrated part of becoming a better developer. Building from scratch gives you confidence, but working with an existing codebase really tests how well you understand systems. I like the point that knowing when not to change something is also part of engineering. 👏🏾
