Why I keep coming back here even without anyone reminding me to

Nobody emails me to come back, and I still check in most days. It's mostly that there's a thread I'm curious about the outcome of, or someone replied to something I said and I want to see where it goes, or I'm tracking my own small progress against what I said I'd do last week. None of that is complicated or engineered, it's just that the place has become a place where something is actually happening that involves me.

The interview question that trips up most junior candidates

It's rarely the hardest algorithm question, it's usually 'tell me about a time something didn't go as planned'. Candidates either pick something too small to matter or something they still sound defensive about. The strongest answers describe a real mistake plainly and spend most of the time on what changed afterward, not on justifying what happened.

None of the engineers I mentor without a degree got there by hiding it

I've mentored a handful of self-taught developers over the years, and the ones who ended up doing well never tried to disguise the gap, they just made it irrelevant with visible work. A repo that runs, a clear writeup of a bug they fixed, a project that solves something real for someone. It's slower than a degree in some rooms, but it's a path that actually holds up under questions.

Offering honest portfolio reviews this week, first five replies

Free time this week that I'd rather spend usefully, so the first five people who reply with a portfolio link get direct, specific feedback, not generic encouragement. Fair warning that I'll point out what's confusing or missing, not just what looks nice. If you're not ready for blunt notes, wait for a gentler reviewer.

A university covering access for its students changes who gets to show up here

Was talking to a lecturer friend about whether a department could sponsor access to something like this for an entire cohort instead of expecting broke students to pay individually. It shifts the whole equation, the institution absorbs the cost once, and every student in that programme gets the benefit without a personal decision to spend money they don't have. Feels like a more realistic path to reach students than hoping each one pays out of pocket.

Ten years in and I still feel behind on new tools

A junior on my team mentioned a library last week that I'd never heard of, and for a second the old imposter syndrome came right back. What settled me is remembering that fundamentals, how to debug, how to reason about a system, how to communicate a tradeoff, don't expire the way specific tools do. New tools are worth learning, but they're not the whole job.

How I learned to give code review feedback without sounding harsh

Early in my career as a reviewer, my comments were technically correct and demoralising, mostly because I only wrote something when there was a problem. Now I try to make sure at least one comment on every review points out something done well, not as a rule but because I actually look for it now. Feedback lands very differently when the person can tell you're reviewing the work, not judging them.
