Signs you are close to burnout while learning to code
A few mentees this month described the same pattern, dread before opening the laptop, comparing their progress constantly to people online, and treating rest as wasted time. That combination usually shows up right before someone quits entirely, not while they're struggling with a hard topic. If any of that sounds familiar, the fix is rarely 'push through', it's usually rest and a smaller daily target.
A short list of resources I keep recommending to mentees
Instead of typing this out individually every week, here is what comes up most in my mentoring calls: MDN for anything web, one free structured course rather than ten random videos, and one small project finished over three abandoned big ones. None of this is exciting advice, but it's the advice that actually works when people follow it.
When I started charging a little for mentoring calls, and why most of it is still free
For two years every mentoring conversation I had was free, and I'll keep answering questions in threads here for free indefinitely because that's what built the trust in the first place. What changed is I now offer a small number of paid one-on-one sessions each month for people who want structured, ongoing accountability rather than a one-off answer. It felt uncomfortable to charge anything at first, but it's let me say yes to more people overall instead of burning out saying yes to everyone for nothing.
The diaspora members here bring something the rest of us do not
A few people I mentor are Africans living abroad who still want to build with and for people back home, and they bring context on remote-work expectations and international client relationships that most of us haven't had to learn yet. It's not charity from them, it's a genuine two-way exchange, we bring local context and problems worth solving, they bring exposure to markets and standards elsewhere. A community that spans both sides of that gap ends up more useful than one that only has one half of it.
Six weeks into our small accountability group, here is what changed
Started with four people checking in weekly, and we're still at four, nobody has dropped off, which honestly surprised me. Two people finished projects they'd been stuck on for months, and one changed their learning plan entirely after realising out loud what they'd been avoiding. The format stayed boring on purpose, same three questions every week, and that seems to be exactly why it worked.
