Cut three features so we can ship scheduling this week
Clinic scheduling MVP was drowning in nice-to-haves (SMS templates, waitlist analytics, custom branding). We cut them. This week: create appointment, show day view, mark attended. Everything else waits for real usage.
Cutting our MVP scope in half this week
We had a list of nine features for the clinic scheduling tool, and after talking to two more clinic admins this week, I cut it down to four. Everything else was stuff I assumed they needed rather than things they actually asked for. Painful to delete work that's already half built, but shipping something smaller and real beats shipping something bigger and untested.
How I am thinking about paying for this place without charging the builders on it
Someone asked me offline how a community like this could ever sustain itself without eventually charging the people posting and learning here, and I've been chewing on that for a while. My honest answer is layered: the community stays free for builders, posting, learning, following mentors, none of that should ever cost someone trying to get started. Where money should come in is the other side, employers and businesses paying for genuinely better discovery once there's real, visible talent to discover, not for access to people who haven't built anything yet. It's not a finished plan and there's no funding attached to it, just the shape of a model I think is fair to both sides.
What I got wrong hiring my first contractor
Brought on a freelance developer for two months without writing down clear expectations about communication frequency, and it caused more friction than the actual work quality did. We were both reasonable people who just assumed different things about what 'regular updates' meant. Next time I'm putting expectations in writing before work even starts, not after the first misunderstanding.
A professional network is worth more the longer people stay honest on it
Been reading about why some professional networks stay useful for decades and others fade after the initial buzz, and the pattern I keep seeing is trust decay, once profiles fill up with exaggeration and dead links, people stop bothering to check them. That's the principle I try to build around with our own small tool, keep the incentive pointed at honest, current information rather than impressive-sounding claims. It's not a guarantee of anything, just a bet that the boring, honest version compounds better over years than the flashy one does.
Talking to five clinics about pricing before writing more code
Paused feature work this week to just ask five clinic admins what they currently pay for scheduling, if anything, and what they'd consider reasonable. Two of them pay for nothing right now and use a paper diary, which changes how I think about pricing entirely. Better to find this out now than after building a pricing page nobody responds to.
Commission per placement or flat subscription, which model actually respects builders more
Thinking through this for a talent platform generally, not announcing anything specific. A commission model only gets paid when someone actually gets hired, which sounds fair, but it can quietly push a platform toward pushing people into any placement rather than the right one. A flat subscription for the business side removes that pressure, but then you're charging regardless of outcome. Which failure mode is worse in practice?
Fifteen customer calls later, our assumptions were mostly wrong
Went into these calls expecting clinics to want more features and automation, and instead most of them just wanted the current manual process to be less error prone, fewer double bookings, not more bells and whistles. Rewrote our roadmap after call eight once the pattern became impossible to ignore. Uncomfortable to admit how much we assumed instead of asked.
