How much validation is too much validation? 👀

1 reply 12 views

While building APIs with Django REST Framework, I've noticed how quickly validation logic can pile up. You validate the request in your serializer, enforce constraints in your database, and sometimes repeat checks in your service layer. At first, it feels like you're writing the same logic three times. But each layer protects something different. I've been trying to find the right balance between keeping my code clean and making sure invalid data never slips through. Backend developers, where do you prefer to handle most of your validation — serializers, models, database constraints, or a combination? Curious how others structure theirs. #Python #Django #BackendDevelopment #SoftwareEngineering

I think validation works best when each layer has a clear responsibility. The serializer can handle incoming data, the database can enforce data integrity, and the service layer can handle business rules. The goal isn't to repeat checks everywhere, but to make sure each layer protects what it's responsible for without creating unnecessary duplication. Finding that balance is what keeps validation both reliable and maintainable.
